Energy Consumption Page 209

Q: What are some ways electricity can be used?

A: Transportation, Heat, Recreation

Q: What are some uses for hydrogen fuel cells?

A: Transportation, Heat, As a Battery

Q: What are some pros and cons to storing energy as hydrogen? In batteries? In flywheels?

A:
Pros for hydrogen-

  • High energy density
  • Can be produced from any electrical source
  • Water is very easily available
  • Don't store a fixed amount of energy
Cons for hydrogen-
  • Must be handled carefully
  • Very inefficient
  • Will create environmental problems
Pros for batteries-
  • Store a fixed amount
  • Can range in size
  • Stable
  • Can hold charge for an extended period
Cons for batteries-
  • Expensive to build
  • Expensive to maintain
  • Contain dangerous chemicals
  • Will create environmental problems

Q: How can the same energy sources be provided with less energy for lighting? For transportation?

A:  Certain things take less energy to work than others.

Q: When does conservation reduce quality of life? Improve quality of life?

A: Conservation reduces quality of life because you have to make sacrifices and use less energy, but it improves quality of life when you have more money to do other things because you spend less on quality.

Energy Consumption Questions Page 198

Q: How does the concentration of energy in a source affect how people can use energy?

A: It causes better development of an energy source, and it also causes people to not use new energy sources.

Q: How do the United States, China, and Kenya compare in total energy consumption? In per capita energy consumption?

A: The United States consumes more energy than China, despite being only 23.588335726% of China's population.
